Origin of online craps |
Craps history takes us to Rome. Though the origin of online craps is unknown, traces can be found in the roman battle-camps where the roman soldiers played a similar game with cube-shaped pig knucklebones. Craps is said to have originated from Hazard, which became popular around the time of the Crusade. The name "craps" comes from the French pronunciation of the word "crabs", a moniker for hazard. |
Online Craps’ Time Line
Stage 1 |
Though this is unverifiable, the year in which craps history began is said to have been in 573 BC (in Egypt). Like most present day games, its root is also hard to find. Even Roman legions did indulge in a similar kind of game. |
Stage 2 |
Most of the casino games historians believe that online craps has its roots in the game Hazard. Some historians, while documenting the history of craps, also mention the name of an Englishman Sir William of Tyre. He and his knights are accredited with the invention of Hazard during The Crusade. This game was a favourite pursuit for crusaders during the siege of a castle called Hazarth or Asart. The time is said to be around 1125 AD. |
Stage 3 |
Starting from the Arab world, Hazard spread westward, across Europe into France and England around 1500 AD. The famous poet, Geoffrey Chaucer, has mentioned this game more than once in his much celebrated the Canterbury Tales. Hazard used two six-sided cubes that had one unique number engraved on each side (similar to today’s dice). In hazard, “hazard banker" fixed the bet and the player had to choose a number between 5 and 9. Then the dice were rolled. The lowest value 2, (1 and 1), was called crabs. |
Stage 4 |
In early 1700s, Montmort set the formal rules for Hazard. Hazard reached America with its imperial masters, France and England. In France this game became crabs and from that evolved the modern day craps. |
Stage 5 |
History of craps or online craps, as we know it, just has only around 200 years of history. This game was simplified and designed by Bernard de Manderville of Louisiana in 1813. |
Stage 6 |
During the 1830s, the game gained popularity, but it was 1865 when the the craps history saw another milestone. John H. Winn introduced the “don’t pass” bet rules. This rule enabled the player to bet against the shooter (the dice roller). Earlier, the only option to bet was with the shooter. Now, the odds of the game was equalized thus tampering the dice was not going to be profitable. This new development kick started the journey, which took craps to many countries. |
Stage 7 |
Craps had to go online; it was just the question of when. The popularity of this game made craps among the first casino games to go online. That was the beginningof online craps. |
Different Hues of Online Craps. |
Two versions of craps were developed. Those were: Street craps: In this version, two players bet against each other on the rolls.
