Free Online Blackjack Games Glossary

In order to speak about a concept you require a name for it first. A name is a hook on which we hang our cognitive and information related to the said thing or subject.

That means sufficient knowledge of the words and phrases used in a particular field is essential to understand it, think or even to talk about it. Blackjack is no exception. This page will introduce a blackjack glossary, which will help you in playing online blackjack in the best casinos on the Internet. This free online blackjack game glossary will be a good starting point in an attempt to the understand this game.

Basic strategy

By exercising the granted option of choice, a player can blunt the casino’s edge by making optimal decisions sans card counting or shuffle tracking. This complete set of (legal) optimal play is called basic strategy in blackjack.

Blackjack

If the first two cards dealt to the player are an ace and a face card or a ten card it’s called a blackjack or a natural blackjack.

Betting limits

Betting limits refer to the minimum and maximum amount a player can bet on a table. This betting or table limit is set by the casino and may vary from table to table.

Burn cards

When the top one or more cards are discarded after the cards have been shuffled and cut by one of the players before play starts, these cards are called burn cards.

Bust

A player is called bust, if a new card drawn results in a total of more than 21.

Face Card

This term is generally used to describe cards that have faces made on it; kings, queens and jacks of all the suits. In blackjack each of them are worth 10 points.

Hard Hand and Soft hand

A hand with no ace or the hand which can’t count ace as 11 is called a hard hand in blackjack.

The hand in which a player is free to exercise the options of counting ace either as 1 or as eleven is known as soft hand in blackjack.

Hit or Draw

Asking the dealer to draw an additional card (in addition to the two initial cards dealt) for you is asking for a hit.

Hole Card

The dealer’s face down card is called hole card.

Insurance

If the dealer’s face up card is an ace and the player decides on insurance, it means the player is betting against himself and is expecting a natural blackjack for dealer.

Push

When the value of the player’s card and that of the dealer’s card equals it is a push. The player retains his bet as the winner is undecided.

Split

When both the dealt cards are of equal value, the player has the option of splitting them in two and then using them to play two separate hands.

Stand

In blackjack stand refers to the situation when the player decides not to draw any more cards and decides to keep the existing card.

Surrender

If the player perceives that the dealer’s hand is of higher value than his own hand, he can choose to surrender by giving up half of his bet and withdraw from the game. This option is not available in all casinos.
